DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
"Music speaks all languages, and a Musician in the Canadian Forces
provides music for all ceremonial activities such as graduations, parades,
public exhibitions and displays, dedications of public buildings, public
concerts as well as a host of other functions."
According to the military manual Band Instructions, "The role of
the band
branch is to provide musical support to the CF in order to foster high
morale, esprit de corps, and thus operational effectiveness.
This is achieved by providing:
-
(a) Musical support for
- 1) military parades and ceremonies
- 2) recruiting
- 3) military functions and recreational activities
- 4) public relations activities
-
(b) Training support for voluntary bands
-
(c) Advice to commanders and staffs on music and employment of bands."
Putting this into context, the band's role is to provide support for the
regular and reserve force units in Northern Alberta, as well as providing
a link between the Canadian Armed Forces and the civilian community in
Alberta and beyond. This is achieved by the performances of the band at
both military and civilian functions. These have included the Klondike
Days Parade, Calgary Stampede parade, Lethbridge Tattoo as well as opening
and/or halftime performances for professional hockey, football and soccer
teams in the province. These performances are in addition to the military
parades and mess dinner functions that the band is tasked to
support.
